I Tried Running Google Ads Myself - Changed My Mind Already

A New Journey into Google Ads

I wrote a blog about 2 weeks ago, announcing how I had decided to run Google Ads myself. I described how I came to this conclusion after the last few years of mixed results using an ad manager. I felt it was time to learn how to run it myself. Well, I did, and I ran the campaign for about a week and I didn’t get one conversion. That means after spending over £260, I have nothing to show for it. That’s a little worrying.

Analysing the Situation

Well, there are lots of explanations for this. It could be that the campaign is fine, and I just need to give the algorithm time to learn what works. On the other hand, the campaign might be the problem, and waiting longer and paying for the pleasure might not pay off. Like all things of this nature, it’s never easy to tell what to do when you’re in the thick of it. So I decided to seek some outside 'expert' support.

Finding Expert Help

I have gone through Fiverr.com and found someone that I think could be the person for me. It’s not cheap—almost £400 for him to set up two campaigns—but I think it’s best to have someone with years of experience to get things going. I am confident that the work I have done in creating value through the services deserves more bookings; I just need to make sure the right people see it.

Preparing for the Next Steps

The next step then is to have a meeting with him so I can explain the business and the campaign goals. It’s really important to understand this before running a campaign, and this is already an area that I can see might suffer when using freelancers, as it’s part of the process that’s important to me but not so important to someone trying to make money. A good designer or professional should take an interest, as the results they are likely to achieve will rely heavily on these early meetings. Let’s see.

Why I Chose This Freelancer

Why did I choose him? Honestly, it came down to my gut feeling. Of course, his portfolio, track record, and client reviews help, but this isn’t always easy to ascertain as genuine or inflated. It might be strange, but a big factor in who I choose to work with is whether I feel they are trustworthy. I will pay extra for trustworthiness. In his case, the reviews and, funnily enough, his profile photo left me a feeling that I could trust him.

Trusting People’s Faces

A few years ago now, I learned the value of trusting people’s faces. We were in Morocco, and after only being in the country for a few hours, I scraped the side of my rental car against a narrow underpass. The friend in whose name the car had been hired was stressed out of fear of losing his deposit. We had very few options because the door was too heavily damaged to be ignored. On one of our strolls a few days before our flight, we walked past a small motorcycle repair shop in Fes. The mechanic caught our eye, and we chanced a request of whether he was able to repair the car. He said he could. We couldn’t believe it because everything about the situation screamed he couldn’t, but as my friend said after leaving the car with him, "I liked his smile." To our surprise, and immense gratitude and relief, he came through, and the car was repaired perfectly.

Moving Forward with Google Ads

So here I am. I’m going to let this person set up and run Google Ads for a month. If he’s successful, I will have two advantages. Firstly, I can then assess his campaign against my own and with the insights I have about Google Ads, to see why. This will be massively helpful, as I do want to know how Google Ads works successfully and CPC is going to be massively important in the future for this business and any other ventures I may take. That’s not to say I will not continue to use his services after a month, as to be honest, running Google Ads is not the best use of my time. If he is as good as I hope, I’ll keep him on to manage the account.
